SUMMARY
Al-Bustan News Service is looking for an ambitious reporter to join our team for a Journalism Fellowship. The Journalism Fellow will produce outstanding articles for our news site, covering Arab-American and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities in the Greater Philadelphia area.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We seek an individual with strong editorial judgment, a background in news, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and an ability to identify and pursue local news stories. This position requires a clear understanding of journalistic ethics and standards, with a commitment to factual accuracy, an adherence to deadlines, and the ability to work with a team. The Fellow will work remotely and report to the Editor. The Fellowship spans 6 months from the hire date, with the possibility of continued work with Al-Bustan News Service.
Responsibilities include:
Report two news articles per month. (500-word minimum)
Monitor news and generate relevant story ideas that include a wide range of voices and perspectives.
Report stories assigned by the News Service Editor.
Pitch news stories to the News Service Editor.
Collaborate with Al-Bustan’s News Service Editor, other Journalism Fellows, staff, and leadership.
Adhere to Al-Bustan’s editorial standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Minimum of 1-2 years of reporting experience
Excellent news judgment
Ability to write stories following AP guidelines
Ability to work under deadline
Ability to work collaboratively
Strong communication and organizational skills
Passionate about news relevant to the Arab-American and larger SWANA communities
Commitment to independent media
Ability to cover news stories within the Philadelphia area.
Ability to attend periodic meetings at our Philadelphia offices.
Applicants must have valid US work authorization
Being bilingual (Arabic/English) is a plus
FELLOWSHIP DATES
6 months, beginning Spring 2024
COMPENSATION
Fellows are paid $625 per article with a maximum compensation during the Fellowship of $7,500.
